The Odyssey Review: A Visually Stunning Epic That Runs a Bit Too Long

The Odyssey comes in at a 7.9/10, and in many ways, that score reflects a movie that is undeniably impressive—but not quite perfect. This is a film that feels massive in scope, ambition, and execution, and when it’s working at its best, it’s hard not to be completely pulled in.

First, the experience matters. Seeing this at the TCL Chinese Theatre in IMAX adds another layer entirely. There’s something about that theater—the history, the scale, the atmosphere—that elevates the movie before it even starts. You feel like you’re watching something important. And for a film like The Odyssey, that kind of setting actually enhances what Nolan is trying to do.

Because at the center of it all, Christopher Nolan is doing what he always does—pushing the boundaries of what a movie can feel like. Visually, this is one of the most striking films you’ll see. The scale, the cinematography, the practical effects—it all feels big, intentional, and crafted with precision. Nolan has a way of making scenes feel monumental, and this movie is filled with them.

The cast is another major strength. Across the board, the performances are top-tier.

Matt Damon delivers a grounded, commanding lead performance Anne Hathaway brings emotional weight and presence Tom Holland adds energy and vulnerability Zendaya continues to prove she can elevate any role Robert Pattinson brings intensity and unpredictability

It’s the kind of ensemble where every actor feels like they belong in a film of this scale. And it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see this movie show up across multiple categories come awards season.

Where the film loses some momentum, though, is in its length. At nearly three hours, it starts to feel stretched. There are sequences that are visually impressive but linger longer than they need to. It’s one of those movies where you can clearly see a tighter, more focused version somewhere in there—closer to two hours—that might have hit even harder.

That doesn’t ruin the experience, but it does slow it down at times. You feel it in the pacing. Some moments drag just enough to pull you slightly out of what is otherwise a very immersive film.

    Final Take

The Odyssey is still a must watch. It’s visually stunning, filled with strong performances, and directed by one of the best in the business. It may run long, but when it’s working, it absolutely delivers.

Just go in prepared—this is an experience. And you’re going to want snacks.
