Weekend Box Office (May 1–3): The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened huge with $77M, Michael held with $54M, and Mario + Project Hail Mary kept rolling in a strong summer-kickoff frame.

Weekend Box Office (May 1–3, 2026)

    Domestic (U.S./Canada) — Top 10 (3-day weekend gross)

The Devil Wears Prada 2 — $77.0M Michael — $54.0M The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — $12.1M Project Hail Mary — $8.6M Hokum — $6.4M Animal Farm — $3.4M Lee Cronin’s The Mummy — $2.23M Deep Water — $2.15M That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea — $1.0M The Drama — $0.91M

This was a big, healthy frame by 2026 standards, with the top 10 combining for about $167.8M and The Numbers listing roughly $170.1M total from 32 reporting films. More importantly, it felt like a real kickoff to the summer corridor: AP noted that the domestic box office is now running about 14% ahead of last year, at roughly $2.8B year to date.

The story of the weekend was obviously The Devil Wears Prada 2. Its $77M opening was a major launch for a legacy sequel, and it added $156.6M overseas for a $233.6M global debut. AP also reported that women made up about 76% of the audience, which helps explain why it opened with such force despite mixed reviews. This was nostalgia, star power, and escapist fun all hitting at the right time.

In second, Michael held extremely well for a giant opener, dropping 44.4% to $54M in weekend two. Its domestic total is already about $183.8M, and its global haul has reached $423.9M. That is the kind of hold that turns a splashy debut into a real event hit.

Lower down, the holdovers kept showing real durability. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie added another $12.1M in weekend five for a domestic total above $402.7M, while Project Hail Mary pulled in $8.55M in weekend seven and is now past $318.3M domestic. Both are clearly in the “long-run hit” category now, even if the spotlight this weekend shifted elsewhere.

Among the newcomers behind Prada, Hokum led with $6.4M, while Animal Farm opened to $3.4M and Deep Water started with $2.15M. None of them broke out, which made this a top-heavy frame: one huge opener, one massive holdover, then a big drop to the rest of the market.

    Overall context

This weekend reinforced a trend we’ve been talking about in these recaps for a while: audiences are really responding to pure escapist entertainment. AP quoted Comscore’s Paul Dergarabedian saying exactly that, and the chart backed it up. Prada 2, Michael, Mario, and Project Hail Mary are all very different movies, but they share one thing: they sell a clear, crowd-friendly experience. That has been the winning formula lately, and it showed again here.
